This is a subway station for Kaohsiung, the second-largest city in Taiwan. It comprises a three-level underground concourse and twelve entrances of varying sizes. At ground level, the four main entrances are located at the intersection of two highways, and these main entrances and the intersection are contained in a conspicuous 140m-diameter circular plaza with a 50m-diameter pool in the middle. Incidentally, this intersection is a symbolic place – the site of the 1947 events that instigated Taiwan’s democratic movement – and the monumental quality of the architecture was one of the issues being evaluated in the design competition. The three-dimensionally curved design of the main entrances, geometrically determined by the intersection points of 800 differently shaped glass elements, was the result of responding to this demand. The jury likened the shape to praying hands, and described it as a “form of prayer.”
